Photo shoot and positioning

I chose to copy Glamour magazine and how they centre women on the cover, with bright, bold lettering and phrases to draw attention. Therefore, I set up my own mini photo shoot, and took a few pictures of my friend modelling so I could use similar pictures and poses. I also did this for other pages of the magazine, and made up small stories about them. I had chosen the topic of ‘Bangs’ and the colour ‘black’, so I made stories up about how they had come back into fashion and what celebrities were creating or carrying on the tern.

In my mini photo shoot, I mainly featured two girls, one for my makeup page and the other for fashion hairstyle trend. I took the pictures according to how they were dressed and how much makeup they had on. The one with more makeup, I chose close-up shots of her full face, where the other, I chose medium to full length pictures, and a few close-up shots to show off her hair style.

On the fashion trend pages, I chose to have a black backgrounds to make them stand out, and for my pictures to also stand out. Most magazine pages are with white backgrounds, and the few that have coloured backgrounds stand out the most, which is why I chose to have these black. As the featured women, I chose to emphasize the male gaze to display how those pages would normally attract more attention compared with other pages of the magazine. The other two I chose to keep white. The ‘sex gods’ page, to emphasize how the female gaze isn’t as dominant as the male gaze, and therefore white backgrounds do not attract as much attention as coloured backgrounds do.

On the page for the female gaze, I originally had the top 10 males to feature, but I found 5 was a lot easier to fit on one page. I found on other magazines, the ‘hottest’ men’s pictures were the largest on the page, so I chose the have them in size order.

Lastly, looking at other magazines, I chose to have page numbers in cirles at the bottom corner of each page. Most magazines had page numbers displayed in this way. I chose to have the colour pink as the circle to appeal to the feminine audience, and white numbers onside, so the numbers stood out.

Colours and Fonts

I chose to copy the Glamour brand, by having the brand name at the top in big letters, so it stands out. I chose the colour pink for the majority of the writing on the cover and other pages of the magazine, not just because Glamour also use a lot of pink; but because this is a very girly and feminine colour, which attracts the right target audience: teenage women and older. However, as I mentioned in my Literature Review, young girls are conditions to like the colour pink by continuously being dressed in that colour clothing, given those colour toys to play with and their rooms being painted this colour, the magazine also attracts them. The bright colours and ‘pretty’ women on the front attract their attention and once buying the magazine, they aspire to be like the women in it, thus entering the cycle of society’s ideology and stereotype. I chose the font of Franklin Gothic Medium, because it was the closest looking font to the Glamour brand.

I looked at other magazines, such as ‘Catch Me Up’, ‘Help’, ‘Yes!’ and ‘Teen Vogue’, all of which appealed to the same age group / target audience. They all featured bright, bold colours, and pictures of females modelling. Only a few images of women were ‘in-the-moment’ pictures (mainly celebrities), but nearly all the photo’s of men were natural pictures. This is why I chose to have all of my pictures of women modelling, and all of my pictures of men as natural shots. Even the two pictures I had of Beyonce and Rihanna, I chose to have modelling pictures, to emphasize the male gaze, and how dominant it is over the female gaze.

Notes for my Magazine

To back-up my points in my magazine, I needed to show a celebrity following or creating the trend. Most magazines, when describing fashion trends, display celebrities who are carrying on this trend, for readers to also then copy the trend.

I chose to show the fashion trend of black clothes and the hairstyle which has come back into fashion.
I chose to do 'bangs as a fashion hair style, and use Rihanna as a celebrity displaying this trend. Even though she had a full fridge with her previous hairstyle when she had dyed her hair red, I decided to use a more recent picture with her 'bob' haircut.

For my second fashion trend, I chose to portray how the colour Black has become more popular. I chose a recent picture of Beyonce, another famous celebrity to display the fashion trend.

When reading through Glamour Magazine, I found that the stories, fashion and celebrity news all appealed to mostly female teenagers.; the main target audience. The stories were written in a playful, informal tone. I needed to mirror this in my magazine, so I kept the informal tone consistent and also used some slang words like LBD (Little Black Dress) and the American word 'Bangs', another word for fringe, to appeal to the same target audience.

Topics and Ideas for my magazine

While reviewing glamour magazine, I found that the majority of photos of women, were of models who posed for the camera in the latest fashion and with the latest make-up. All the men featured in the magazine were celebrities who were caught by the paparazzi, no male models were featured.
The majority of the magazine gave viewers information on up-to-date fashion and make-up, women posing for the camera, some in a seductive way.

In my magazine, I would mirror this. I will create my own photo shoot, with a thin female posing. I will also have a page on tips about make-up and how to get a certain look. For my page featuring the female gaze, I will rate male celebrities.

Pages:

Cover page, mirroring the cover of a glamour magazine; a women posing, centred in the middle, with captions surrounding her about the contents of the magazine. The brand name: Glamour, is behind the centred image.
